The Greeks and Romans have their ruins and so do we. Old Sheldon Church was destroyed by both the English Army during the Revolutionary War and by Sherman’s Army during the Civil War. Both times these actions were taken because gun power was being stored in the structure to be used by the enemy of these foreign invaders. Today, it is a quiet, peaceful place beside the highway between Beaufort and Yemassee. Often visited and photographed by travelers as it sits shaded by the centurion Live Oaks that have grown around it. The tombstones of the Bull family and other early Americans can be found beside the church.
